Orthodontic Treatment with Orthognathic Surgery Support

When skeletal jaw discrepancy is substantial, tooth movement alone is often insufficient. Combined orthodontic–orthognathic care defines objectives from diagnostic records (including cephalometrics and articulated models or digital equivalents), planned jointly by the orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon. Protocols are individualized rather than one-size-fits-all.

Digital records and pre-surgical orthodontic planning

Highlights

  • Coordinated planning with maxillofacial surgery
  • Pre-surgical orthodontic preparation (dental decompensation / setup)
  • Post-surgical occlusal finishing and retention planning

Indications and case selection

Marked skeletal Class II/III patterns, significant vertical components of open bite, asymmetry, or concerns addressed primarily by skeletal repositioning are typical topics for combined care. Diagnosis integrates clinical examination with imaging when indicated.

Benefit–risk and timing consider growth status, periodontal support, and patient expectations.

Phases of care (overview)

In the conventional sequence, teeth are aligned into a planned pre-surgical setup, jaw position is corrected surgically, then occlusal finishing and retention follow. Surgery-first or hybrid workflows vary the order in selected cases.
